Sneak Peek at Windows 8Simplex-IT has been hosting free informational Lunchinars now for a number of years. Every third Wednesday of every month we extend an open invitation to join us for a free meal and presentation on a topic we hope will be of interest to Small-Medium Business owners.

But this blog post marks a first! This is the first time we have announced our schedule for a full six months in advance! So get out your calendars and mark these red letter dates. You won’t want to miss what we have in store for you!

Typically these events are held at the Stow Hampton Inn, 4331 Lakepointe Corporate Dr. (off Rt. 8 at Steels Corners Road) from 11:30am – 1:00pm. Some events may vary, however, so we encourage you to check back to this blog for updated announcements each month. By now you may have heard – effective April 8, 2014 Microsoft will no longer support its most popular operating system of all time, Windows XP. And that’s not all! Office 2003 will be reaching its End of Support on that date, as well.

You may well be wondering, “What does this mean to me? Call me old fashioned, but I’m still using Windows XP and/or Office 2003 and the software seems to be working just fine. I recently ran across this article that seeks to quantify how outdated technology detracts from a business’s profitability and competitiveness. Anecdotally, if one draws a dramatically different enough comparison we can, of course, assume the answer. For example, if Business A is still using a typewriter for all its correspondence and Company B utilizes a Word Processing program on a modern PC, which would be the most productive? Duh! Company B! But this is the first time I’ve seen a survey that actually attempts to quantify the differences.

Note, as does the author, the two research studies cited were commissioned by Microsoft and Intel, both of whom have a vested interest in having you purchase new technology. That said, the results made sense and were not all that surprising.

State of the Art…in 1908!

The Windows XP computer you bought in late 2001 still seems to work fine. Sure, it takes 15 minutes to fully boot up in the morning, but that’s ok. It gives you time to get a cup of coffee! And your Office 2003 programs are still functional even though they lack the advanced features of more current versions. Why think about upgrading?

If these performance issues aren’t enough to give you pause, consider this. On April 8, 2014 Microsoft will officially discontinue support for Windows XP and Office 2003. This has important ramifications because as new security vulnerabilities are discovered past that date, they will no longer receive patches. This could mean big problems for organizations of any size.

Staying current with technology is an ongoing challenge. More importantly, the primary question is how do you know when it’s time to upgrade? Simplex-IT’s Brandon King Previews Google Glass

Simplex-IT’s own Brandon King kept a near record audience captivated at Hattie’s Café in Hudson during his recent presentation on Google’s latest revolutionary prototype product, called simply “Glass.”

Having been chosen to be a member of the exclusive Google Glass Explorers, a national group of select field testers, Brandon has had the good fortune to be using an advanced prototype of this innovative product for the last several months. So to begin, he answered the big question everyone had, “Exactly what IS Google Glass?”

Google Glass is a wearable computer with an optical head-mounted video display, in which the user can interact with the Internet via finger taps and natural language voice commands. Among its many capabilities it allows the user to get turn-by-turn directions, take pictures and videos with its built-in camera, as well as surf the web, and more. As Brandon explained, because this is a prototype product its features are continually being updated and expanded. By the time it’s finally released (no official date has yet been announced) there’s a good chance it will be significantly different, but its current configuration gave everyone plenty to talk about!
