Sneak Peek at Windows 8Simplex-IT has been hosting free informational Lunchinars now for a number of years. Every third Wednesday of every month we extend an open invitation to join us for a free meal and presentation on a topic we hope will be of interest to Small-Medium Business owners.

But this blog post marks a first! This is the first time we have announced our schedule for a full six months in advance! So get out your calendars and mark these red letter dates. You won’t want to miss what we have in store for you!

Typically these events are held at the Stow Hampton Inn, 4331 Lakepointe Corporate Dr. (off Rt. 8 at Steels Corners Road) from 11:30am – 1:00pm. Some events may vary, however, so we encourage you to check back to this blog for updated announcements each month. Our August event, the Annual Simplex-IT Picnic, for example is held at our Worldwide International Headquarters in Hudson from 4-8 pm.

Here’s the schedule:

July 16:                 Virtualization for the SMB

August 13:           7th Annual Simplex-IT Picnic

September 17:  Servers in the Cloud

October 15:        When is IT Obsolete?

November 13:   Security Strategies for the SMB

December 17:    4th Annual Holiday Geek Raffle

January 21:         IT Trends for 2015

As you can probably tell from the above topics, these presentations are not sales pitches for products we sell or companies we partner with. On the contrary. At Simplex-IT we have a passion for what we do and believe if we freely share that passion and knowledge that it will produce more knowledgeable consumers of IT services. And ultimately that will bring more clients our way.

At least, that’s the plan, and we’re sticking to it!

We hope you’ll mark your calendars and join us!

By now you may have heard – effective April 8, 2014 Microsoft will no longer support its most popular operating system of all time, Windows XP. And that’s not all! Office 2003 will be reaching its End of Support on that date, as well.

You may well be wondering, “What does this mean to me? Call me old fashioned, but I’m still using Windows XP and/or Office 2003 and the software seems to be working just fine. What’s going to happen on April 8? Will the software continue to work? Or not? Will I be exposing myself or my company to potential risks if I don’t upgrade? How concerned should I be?”

Fear not, dear reader, because Simplex-IT is here to answer these and other questions you may have and we’ll even buy lunch to entice you to join us! Join us for our next free Lunchinar where we’ll discuss the options and risks if you don’t – or can’t – upgrade your software.

You don’t want to miss it!

I recently ran across this article that seeks to quantify how outdated technology detracts from a business’s profitability and competitiveness. Anecdotally, if one draws a dramatically different enough comparison we can, of course, assume the answer. For example, if Business A is still using a typewriter for all its correspondence and Company B utilizes a Word Processing program on a modern PC, which would be the most productive? Duh! Company B! But this is the first time I’ve seen a survey that actually attempts to quantify the differences.

Note, as does the author, the two research studies cited were commissioned by Microsoft and Intel, both of whom have a vested interest in having you purchase new technology. That said, the results made sense and were not all that surprising.

Since Simplex-IT’s free Lunchinar this month (November 22, 2013) addresses this very same issue, (When Do You Know Your IT is Obsolete?) I felt it would be appropriate to share the results of this article and the research it covers. To get all the details, go to

State of the Art…in 1908!

The Windows XP computer you bought in late 2001 still seems to work fine. Sure, it takes 15 minutes to fully boot up in the morning, but that’s ok. It gives you time to get a cup of coffee! And your Office 2003 programs are still functional even though they lack the advanced features of more current versions. Why think about upgrading?

If these performance issues aren’t enough to give you pause, consider this. On April 8, 2014 Microsoft will officially discontinue support for Windows XP and Office 2003. This has important ramifications because as new security vulnerabilities are discovered past that date, they will no longer receive patches. This could mean big problems for organizations of any size.

Staying current with technology is an ongoing challenge. More importantly, the primary question is how do you know when it’s time to upgrade? That’s the question we will attempt to answer at Simplex-IT’s next free Lunchinar: “When Do You Know Your IT is Obsolete?” Whether you’re a business owner or IT pro, you will want to be part of this conversation.

Simplex-IT’s popular monthly Lunchinars are always free, open to all and focused on sharing information. And, as a bonus, we will be awarding a door prize of Microsoft Office 2013 and Windows 8 to two lucky attendees. Free food AND free software – how awesome is that?

As always, there will be plenty of time for questions.

Simplex-IT's Brandon King Previews Google Glass

Simplex-IT’s Brandon King Previews Google Glass

Simplex-IT’s own Brandon King kept a near record audience captivated at Hattie’s Café in Hudson during his recent presentation on Google’s latest revolutionary prototype product, called simply “Glass.”

Having been chosen to be a member of the exclusive Google Glass Explorers, a national group of select field testers, Brandon has had the good fortune to be using an advanced prototype of this innovative product for the last several months. So to begin, he answered the big question everyone had, “Exactly what IS Google Glass?”

Google Glass

Brandon sporting his new Google Glass!

Google Glass is a wearable computer with an optical head-mounted video display, in which the user can interact with the Internet via finger taps and natural language voice commands. Among its many capabilities it allows the user to get turn-by-turn directions, take pictures and videos with its built-in camera, as well as surf the web, and more. As Brandon explained, because this is a prototype product its features are continually being updated and expanded. By the time it’s finally released (no official date has yet been announced) there’s a good chance it will be significantly different, but its current configuration gave everyone plenty to talk about!

Has YOUR curiosity been piqued? If so, keep watching these blog pages as we recorded the entire event and we’ll be posting it within a couple weeks for your viewing enjoyment. I’m confident you will find it as captivating as the audience in attendance did. We’ll let you know as soon as it’s available.

October’s Lunchinar is scheduled to give a preview of the new Windows 8.1 Update, scheduled to be made publicly available within a few days after our actual presentation. Again, watch this place for the official announcement and get your reservations in early!

Presented by Bob Coppedge at Simplex-IT’s November 2012 Lunchinar, “When Should You Upgrade Your IT?” is now available for viewing on our YouTube channel.

Also know as “How Do You Know When Your IT is Obsolete?” this presentation discusses the many considerations that you as a business owner and/or IT professional should consider in determining whether your organization should spend its money on new hardware or software. In the final analysis, it’s a judgement call that ultimately will determine how effective and efficient your information technology will be.

This is another informative and entertaining look at one of the most challenging decisions any business must make. So kick your feet up, get a cup of coffee, click on the thumbnail below and enjoy!

Yes, as usual, this month’s lunch is free of charge, with lots of networking for business owners, executives and IT professionals. But instead of our usual business presentation, we’ll be raffling off numerous valuable Geek Gifts at the end of the event (like Windows 7 Ultimate and other goodies you’ll want to own).

And for every dollar in raffle tickets sold, Simplex-IT will match the amount, and the entire proceeds will be donated to the Hattie Larlham Foundation ( – a non-profit organization dedicated to creating opportunities and improving the lives of more than 1,500 children and adults with developmental disabilities in Northeast Ohio.
