State of the Art…in 1908!

The Windows XP computer you bought in late 2001 still seems to work fine. Sure, it takes 15 minutes to fully boot up in the morning, but that’s ok. It gives you time to get a cup of coffee! And your Office 2003 programs are still functional even though they lack the advanced features of more current versions. Why think about upgrading?

Microsoft has announced that Windows Server 2003 will reach its End-of-Life on July 14, 2015. This has important ramifications for those businesses still employing this technology. It means:

  1. No Updates – In 2013 alone there were 37 Critical Updates released for Server 2003. Imagine, if you can, what impact zero updates will have on the security and operation of your infrastructure.
  2. No Compliance – After support ends, continued use of Server 2003 means you will likely fail to meet most industry-wide compliance standard and regulations. Individuals in the health care, financial and legal fields will be particularly affected by this and should be especially concerned.
  3. No Safe Haven – Even virtualized instances of Server 2003 will be unable to pass a compliance audit. Small Business Server 2003 will be similarly affected.
  4. Higher Costs – Steps needed to isolate and protect your 2003 servers will ultimately end up costing you more in the final analysis. Why expose your company to risk and spend more than you have to?

Sneak Peek at Windows 8Simplex-IT has been hosting free informational Lunchinars now for a number of years. Every third Wednesday of every month we extend an open invitation to join us for a free meal and presentation on a topic we hope will be of interest to Small-Medium Business owners.

As evidence that more and more government entities are turning to Microsoft Office 365 cloud services in order to serve their constituents better and at a lower cost, the County of Los Angeles has recently announced they are rolling out this technology across their public safety, operation, and health and human services. “In all, over 30 departments will make the move,” it’s reported.

For this to happen in the most populous county in the United States, we believe this is making a big statement. Key in their decision, according to Dr. Robert Pittman, Chief Information Security Officer for the County of L.A. was the security and built-in compliance for both HIPAA and CJIS (The Criminal Justice Information System (CJIS) provides state, local, and federal law enforcement and criminal justice agencies with access to critical, personal information such as fingerprint records, criminal histories, and sex offender registrations.)

John here. We recently reported on the announcement that Microsoft has made Office available for the iPad for free. But another recent move has slipped under the radar – Office for Android has also recently been made available for free! It’s long been generally acknowledged that Microsoft’s Office is the default business suite for enterprise, despite the growing number of free programs that purport to be compatible, like Google Docs.

This recent article on MakeUseOf, one of my favorite sites, does a good job of comparing the pros and cons of the new Office for Android against Google Docs and comes up with some pretty strong conclusions. Like:

  • “This is the way that document editing on mobile should be”
  • “Office for Android does a wonderful job of preserving formatting between the mobile and desktop Office suites, something that Google Docs has long done poorly at”

Of course, as they point out, there are some limitations. Differing opinions can also be found from other users in the Comments section. But all told, this recent move does underscore Microsoft’s determination to remain King of the Mountain when it comes to being the business suite of choice for today’s enterprises.
